MARIO CUOMO FOR MAYOR
By Michael Moriarty
I intended to return to New York City after eight years of self-imposed political exile. I wanted to go back there to help.
Within a day, there were reports that New York might lift the two-term limit and re-elect Rudolf Giuliani as Mayor.
It was then that I canceled my plans to return to Manhattan.
I left my country and my city for two reasons: President William Clinton and Mayor Rudolf Giuliani.
What Giuliani did to the New York Police Department was disgraceful. His orders were to: "Do whatever is necessary to make New York safe at all hours of the day and night." And the Mayor didn’t care how they did it.
Basically, Giuliani turned the NYPD into his own Jihad.
New Yorkers saw the crime rate drop and elected him again because of it. That crime rates in Berlin and Rome dropped in the 1930’s for the very same reason seemed irrelevant to New Yorkers.
The same New Yorkers who protested Bull Connors’ hosing of civil rights demonstrators in the South had, in effect, elected Bull’s counterpart as Mayor of the Big Apple.
Bob Herbert of The New York Times recorded the heinous behavior of the NYPD in a series of editorials, which should be compiled and published as a book before Mayor Giuliani traipses back into office.
The head of New York’s Police Benevolent Association made a public plea in The Times for his officers not to lose their souls. This had to be a first in the history of U.S. law enforcement.
Though Thomas Friedman and Ronald Steel -- in recent Times articles -- denied that religion had anything to do with the September 11 terrorist attack, I beg to differ. It is now a metaphysical justification that is driving the Jihad. Sins of destruction by US forces in the Middle East and Africa are listed repeatedly. That Christians are the best "counter-punchers" in the world seems to have escaped Osama bin Laden. There is no kind of retaliation that isn’t fully justified. All Islam will provoke in us is an escalating vengeance.
Five thousand American dead from Black September are a terrible sacrifice of innocents.
Don’t kid yourself. Some American Muslims are secretly gloating over the loss of ‘whitebread’ lives at the Twin Towers. Their attitude is, "Well, the white Fortune 500 were turning a big buck in our homelands!"
The pronouncements of righteous Third Worlders -- fresh from kicking the West at the racism conference in Durban -- seem hypocritical. In the eyes of America’s militant minorities, whites are now becoming the "strange fruit" hanging from the World Trade Center tree. These Third World sympathizers smile inwardly with the religious aura of the vindicated.
The horrifying reality of Black September will wipe the smugness off the face of every patriotic American.
Why would God let this happen to us?
Because of our hypocrisy, including the "stone throwing" of those on the Religious Right.
I believe that former New York Governor Mario Cuomo is the "last just man" in the New Babel. He is the only one left to save New York from the fate of Babylon, from the horror of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Those cities fell, not because of vice, but rather hypocrisy.
Yes, Giuliani has been a tower of strength in this nightmare. He brought the city together to endure. He’s not a weak man at all.
However, he carries the stigma of a sin that every New Yorker committed when they re-elected him for the "miracle" of a lower crime rate.
If something is too good to be true, it probably is.
I predict that Giuliani’s reelection will bring suffering of untold proportions to New Yorkers. They should instead elect Cuomo -- a man of God -- to lead them.
God spared Cuomo for precisely this moment. He is unquestionably the man who will save New York and, ultimately, guide America out of this terrible leukemia known as the socialist federation. Cuomo has the patience, wisdom and tenacity to take us to the ‘home’ we founded in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
