The Government as a Referee and No More
Alexis de Tocqueville, recently lauded and imitated by Bernard-Henri Lévy, offered laissez-faire as the best description of the new American government. He was quite impressed; at least by the sense of freedom, and the ease with which Washington left Americans pretty much to themselves to chart their own futures. It certainly paid off.
The question of why the younger generations of Americans, from the wild sixties on, came to so hate the homeland that allowed them to flourish is a state of affairs that can no longer be endured.
With the demise of Robespierre, the imprisonment of Bonaparte, and the floundering of Napoleon III, de Tocqueville must have known there was something better on the other side of the Atlantic. Even Frenchmen can occasionally divorce themselves from the psychosis unleashed by the guillotines of their nation’s revolution.
If any nation is doomed to die of jealousy, it’s France. All of her efforts to prove America wrong and France right about the meanings of liberty, equality and brotherhood only ensured tyranny in the place of freedom, uniformity instead of equality, and a brotherhood that has been increasingly limited to the Intellectual Supremacists of four bloodthirsty governments: the Bloody Empire of Napoleon, the genocidal Third Reich of Hitler, the Soviet Empire of Stalin, and the Homicidal Freezer of Mao Zedong.
This Third Millennium, matriarchal imitation of the foregoing patriarchal Federations of Death – the Socialist Doormat Colonies of the United Nations, unrepentant in their Population Control Policy and criminal neglect of ethnic cleansings and genocides, has so glutted the Free World that all seems to be lost to the triumph of tyranny, uniformity of thought and supremacist movements of all kinds: intellectual, feminist, racist and terrorist.
America’s greatest city, New York, is the perfect example of a population triumph born of individual freedom under the Golden Rule. The good mayors – like Robert F. Wagner, John Lindsay, Ed Koch and David Dinkins, under whom I lived in Manhattan – knew the government to be, at best, the referee of a microcosmic Republic.
My idea of America is that it is a mosaic, not a melting pot. In all its broad-shouldered, vibrant, courageous, life-adoring, forgiving, ever-nurturing generosity of spirit, America is the best example there ever was or ever will be of a free society.
Let our government be our referee. We’ll get in the ring with her and do our best to show the universe what it is to be an idol-worshipping American.
