THE COGIS MISTS
By Michael Moriarty
There is a famous documentary called NIGHT AND FOG (1955). It’s been years since I’ve seen it, but its title inspires the heading for this column. NIGHT AND FOG is about Nazi concentration camps. All of 1940s Europe was plunged into shadows and mist as surely as New Orleans recently drowned in the floodwaters of Lake Pontchartrain.
My metaphysical analysis of American tragedy is that of the Columbia Christians for Life (CCL). In aerial photos of Hurricane Katrina, the shape of that tropical storm resembles that of a fetus. The CCL claim that Katrina’s true purpose was to destroy five abortion clinics in New Orleans. As a Libertarian Conservative, I’ve nothing against what goes on in the Big Easy in terms of the "pursuit of happiness." It’s the contemporary and perversely fashionable refusal to "conserve" the life that’s created during those hot-‘n-heavy nights in the French Quarter.
A night and fog was wrapped around the CIA when Bill Clinton appeared on the scene. The head of the CIA under Richard Nixon was George H.W. Bush and, from the agency’s talent-scouting reports out of every state capital, he must have recognized Clinton’s shining promise.
As vice-president under Ronald Reagan, Bush entered Governor Clinton’s life when he suggested they cooperate on a scheme to fight the Contras in Nicaragua by selling drugs and buying guns with the profits, using Mena, Arkansas, as a base of operations.
Governor Clinton offered Bush all the services of the Arkansas judicial and law enforcement departments, most of which were asked to "look the other way" or to help out in uncomfortable situations.
Now what part of COGI (Clinton Global Intellectual Supremacist) Mists began to emit from Bush’s dreams, I can’t say exactly. However, Bush did not want to run against the popular New York Governor Mario Cuomo for the presidency of the United States in 1988. So Bush might well have looked to his "good friend" in the Democratic Party, Governor Clinton, for help. Clinton engineered the selection of the ineffectual Michael Dukakis, Governor of Massachusetts, as the Democrats’ choice for the presidency.
How Cuomo could be so easily pushed aside to allow Governor Clinton to waltz in and take over must still puzzle the Liberal press. However, if a vice-president with strong connections to the CIA doesn’t want to face Cuomo, there are ways of making sure that doesn’t happen. I’ll let that sit with the reader. I have theories, but they’re only theories. Yet one must be a bit wide-eyed to recall the Oval Office being tossed back and forth between the Bush and Clinton families for 17 years, with no end in sight, as Florida Governor Jeb Bush may run against New York Senator Hillary Clinton for the top job in 2008.
Clinton’s THIRD WAY, with which the Bush family seems to have offered no strong opposition, has America all wrapped up. Why Clinton thought it necessary to cap this achievement with a new organization with his name on it, the CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE, may either be Clinton’s answer to the possibility of Illinois Senator Barack Obama becoming Secretary General of the United Nations – "if you can’t run that one, then start one of your own" – or an act of profound Hitlerian arrogance of which Clinton’s careerism has shown him capable.
At any rate, by now the THIRD WAY FOR AMERICA is a parochial issue in Clinton’s mind. As the soon-to-be, doormat colony of the UN, the U.S. will only be one small part of his "vision" for the future of the human race. I loved it when Bush, Sr. said, in the 2000 election campaign, "I don’t have the ‘vision thing.’" If that’s not a towel in the ring statement, I’ll never hear one; and it carried the same intonation he used when he said, "Read my lips," the comment over never raising taxes, which, of course, he did. These are, I hope, my increasing number of incomparable moments in the diabolical unfolding of the THIRD WAY FOR AMERICA and the CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE.
With landmarks in the history of World War II lodged firmly in my memory, I view the COGIS’ progress during this very silent but terrorist-ridden World War III as an almost predictable scenario.
The COGIS know that the Bill of Rights is still too easily remembered by Americans to go pushing and shoving political dissidents like me into jail or psychiatric clinics. They’re hoping the disarray of all world conservative movements and their almost barren list of summa cum laude graduates will keep it crippled. Yet they have overlooked the simple common sense of the American people.
Eventually, through the Mists of the COGI NATION, a reality called the Golden Rule will appear in North America. Pro-Choice will be increasingly seen as what the COGIS always meant it to be: "Let’s do unto gestating infants what we would never have done unto our own gestating infancy. Why? Because we’re COGIS!"
Yes, "first among equals" is misty but eventually night becomes day, the fog clears and America’s Government by Supreme Court will again return to a government of the people, by the people and for the people.
If not, then we are in for a Dark Age that will last 20,000 years.
