He tries to discredit her testimony by challenging her eyesight and asks her what is pictured on the mural behind him. Her response is more detailed that he expects and he says "You're familiar with the Staton Island narrows of the 16th century?" to which she replies "I can read the legend. Ben replies that maybe some parents will remember this case in the future and a child will live as a result and smiles or comes close to one. He smiles a little more often in this episode than usual, and I've been trying to figure out why--after all, it's a pretty grim situation.
I think that maybe Ben is thinking that, for once, his actions may lead to more than just a conviction...they may actually do some lasting good.
