A Church of Christian Losers

By Michael Moriarty

The only really truthful thing that Jean-Paul Sartre ever said was that: "Genius is not a gift. It's the way a person deals with desperate circumstances."

In the estimate of this profoundly humbled loser, Michael Moriarty, there has been no greater genius walking the earth than Jesus of Nazareth. Only He could perceive the ultimate power of His self-sacrifice. When, in the midst of His agony, He forgave the very people who had nailed Him to the Cross, the greatest act of Divine Genius was completed.

Hanging next to him was the quintessential example of a sin-ridden loser, a man named Dismas, better known as the Good Thief. In the midst of his suffering, Dismas confessed his own sins, proclaimed Christ's innocence, witnessed the Lord's divine love and forgiveness for all of us, requested that he be remembered by Christ in heaven, and received the Lord's promise that he, the Good Thief, would see Paradise that very day.

At the foot of Christ's Cross stood a woman named Mary Magdalene, known in her day as a prostitute "loser." She had remained with Christ to the very end, endured the horrors of His crucifixion, and was the first of His disciples to whom the Lord reappeared on earth to proclaim His Resurrection.

I see no reason why a Church of Christian losers can't be constructed out of their memory, a sanctuary and haven for alcoholics, drug addicts, former felons, the mentally ill, the homeless, the ugly and other "losers", repeatedly treated by society, and in some cases by so-called Christians themselves, as pariahs and heretics.

The established churches, to this day, have refused to honor Mary Magdalene's own sacrifice by even calling her a disciple. In my Church's estimate, there were not 12 disciples but at least 13, and the best of the lot were His acknowledged favorites John and the disciple whom I'd canonize as St. Mary Magdalene, both of whom did not desert their Lord at the very end. Add the Good Thief, Christ's only real defense lawyer in His life, and you actually have 14 disciples.

Though I'm a Catholic, these beliefs would be considered anathema to Rome and possible heresies that might result in my being excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church. The Church of the Good Thief will have to stand on its own denomination, which might as well be labeled "Loserism".

However, Christ declared that we Christians have never been "part of this world." Since all the world hates a loser, the only haven and sanctuary God has afforded us is Christ.
